Turlock prepares to root for Kaep
frost
Frost Bakery and Fine Foods officially authorized Kaepcakes, with part of proceeds benefitting Pitman High Boosters.

He’s Sports Illustrated's newest cover boy, the inspiration for a brand new clothing line, and he’s sold the third most NFL jerseys in the month of January behind only Ray Lewis and Peyton Manning. He’s trending worldwide with his trademark bicep kiss and one of his autographed football cards recently sold online for $6,000. It’s safe to say he’s taken the nation by storm.

His name is Colin Kaepernick, first year starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, and he’s also making his hometown proud.

Undoubtedly, most of Turlock will be gathered around television sets on Sunday when Kaepernick and the 49ers take on the Atlanta Falcons for the NFC Championship and a trip to Super Bowl VLVII. They’ll watch and wait for that big play, be it a pass or run, and they’ll cheer as a fellow Turlocker does the seemingly impossible. Some might shake their heads in amazement. Others will nod knowingly.

Whatever the reaction, local businesses are counting on Kaepernick fever to run rampant this weekend. Sunday in Turlock will be a day of deals and novelties for Kaepernites, from specialty desserts to signature menu items.

Of course, that’s only if you know where to look.

Fans with a sweet tooth will be happy to hear that there will be no shortage of Kaepernick themed cupcakes and cookies as three local bakeries will be catering to San Francisco fans.

Frost Bakery and Fine Foods has created a Kaepcake just in time for the NFC Championship—a red velvet cupcake officially authorized by the man himself. The Kaepcake boasts a red number 7 and is dusted with edible gold sprinkles. With a $3 price tag and 10 percent of all proceeds dedicated to the Pitman High School Boosters Club, you’ll have to find a reason not to grab one.

Lisa’s Cookie Jar and Olde Tyme Pastries are also getting in on the action with Kaepernick jersey cookies. The respective shortbread and short dough cookies have been flying off the shelves throughout the week and are expected to do the same tomorrow.

If you’re one of the few lucky fans to have a real Kaepernick jersey and need more than little treats to satisfy your hunger, then Los Gallos Restaurant and Jura’s Pizza might be the place for you. Customers who walk into Los Gallos with a Kaepernick jersey will receive a free appetizer to enjoy while browsing the game day menu of 49 cent nachos, fries, tacos, and Bud Light Drafts. If pizza and wings are more your speed, take yourself to Jura’s and get 7 percent off your tag for wearing the number 7 jersey.

But you don’t need specific articles of clothing to get deals everywhere.

Dust Bowl Brewing Co. is offering a #7 Kaepernick Special that will be available on Sunday only. The plate includes a jalapeño and pepper jack hamburger, a side, and a 16 ounce beer for $13. And if your thirst outweighs your hunger you’re in luck because happy hour runs all day Sunday.

Another place to quench your thirst is Wellington’s Pub and Restaurant just down the street. Normally closed on Sundays, Wellington’s will be open and ready to serve with discounted drinks and seven menu items priced at $7, including the Kaep Burger and 49er fire wings.

So take your pick from these seven local businesses as you prepare to support San Francisco’s number seven in Atlanta. It’ll be a hard decision to make, but just as long as the 49ers win, it’s doubtful that anyone will be disappointed.
