A recent rating of family friendly cities found Turlock coming in close to the middle of the pack, with an overall 'B' grade.

The rankings, compiled by Apartment List, looked at 474 cities and graded them on attributes that would be favorable for young families looking to rent apartments. The analyses centered around four factors that were identified as being important to young families — safety, housing cost, school quality and child friendliness.

Turlock rated a score of 215 out of the 474 cities studied.

The analyses looked at safety by using FBI crime statistics for violent and property crimes within each city. The score accounted for 35 percent of the total grade. For this category, Turlock had a score of 37.7 percent. In 2014, the latest year available, Turlock had a 16 percent increase in Part One crimes, according to the FBI statistics.

For the housing cost category, Apartment List used census data to calculate the percentage of the median renter income required to rent a two-bedroom apartment. For this factor Turlock scored 34.6 percent.

For school quality cities were ranked on high school graduation rate for public school districts based in that city. This was Turlock’s highest rated factor, with a score of 82.7 percent.

Child friendliness was rated by looking at cities with greater percentages of children and using the reasoning that those communities with higher percentages would likely have more child-friendly activities and policies. Turlock had a score of 75.5 percent.

Turlock was ranked just below Escondido, Calif. And just above Des Moines, Iowa.

Within the area, Apartment List ranked Manteca at 94th, Merced at 113th and Modesto at 335th. The only California city to land in the top 10 was San Ramon, which came in fifth. Allen, Texas was ranked first and St. Louis, Missouri was ranked last.
