Unemployment rate climbs in Turlock, county

Stanislaus County and Turlock both saw a slight increase in unemployment in November, according to the latest numbers from the Employment Development Department.

The unemployment rate for the county in November came in at 8.8 percent, up from a revised 8.4 percent in October and below the year-ago estimate of 10.6 percent. The unemployment rate in Turlock for November was at 7.9 percent, up from a rate of 7.6 percent in October.

The Farm sector recorded the largest loss of jobs over the month at 1,900, followed by Educational and Health Services at a decline of 400 jobs. Manufacturing recorded a loss of 100 jobs.

The sector with the biggest job growth was Trade, Transportation and Utilities, which added an estimated 1,300 positions, most in clothing and general merchandise stores in preparation for holiday sales.

Stanislaus County had an estimated labor force of 241,400, with 220,100 employed and 21,400 unemployed.

The unemployment rate in Merced County was at 10.9 percent, up from 9.1 percent posted in October. San Joaquin County had an unemployment rate of 8.6 percent, up from 8.1 percent last month.

California recorded an unemployment rate of 5.7 percent in November and the nation had an unemployment rate of 4.8 percent for the same time frame.

Around Stanislaus County: Denair had a rate of 5 percent, up from 4.8 percent recorded last month. Hughson had a November rate of 12.7 percent, an increase from the 12.2 percent recorded in October.  Keyes saw their rate jump from 13.9 percent in October to 14.4 percent in November. Ceres had an unemployment rate of 9.5 percent in November, up from 9.1 percent in October.

The occupations with the most help wanted ads in Stanislaus County for November were: Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers - 586; Registered Nurses - 487; Retail Salespersons - 204; Customer Service Representatives - 161; First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers - 155; Physical Therapists - 139; Speech-Language Pathologists - 133; Maintenance and Repair Workers, General - 125; Bookkeeping, Accounting, and Auditing Clerks - 114; and Critical Care Nurses - 104.

The 10 companies that posted the most help wanted ads for November in Stanislaus County were: Tenet Healthcare Corporation - 134; E&J Gallo Winery - 118; TruStaff - 98; Target Corporation - 88; Sutter Health - 85; Kaiser Permanente - 80; Robert Half International - 72; Ceres Unified School District - 60; California State University System - 57; and Modesto City Schools - 57.
