Vehicle struck by train, killing one
emergency

An 81-year-old man lost his life when he turned his vehicle into the path of an oncoming train Monday afternoon in Turlock.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released.

The collision happened at 1:48 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Golden State Boulevard and Monte Vista Avenue.

The 81-year-old Turlock resident was driving a blue Subaru vehicle southbound on Golden State Boulevard and made a westbound turn on to Monte Vista Avenue, the Turlock Police Department reported.

The Subaru drove under the railroad crossing arms and was struck by the oncoming freight train. The impact pushed the vehicle down the tracks past the intersection before the train was able to come to a stop.

The train was traveling at an estimated speed of 40 miles per hour, said Turlock Police spokesperson Sgt. Michael Parmley.

The police department reported that the railroad’s crossing signals, warning lights and crossing arms were working properly prior to the collision.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
