Alex Schwendig slipped into the presence of his loving heavenly Father on Monday, Dec. 20 at the Covenant Village Care Center in Turlock. He was born on Dec. 26, 1934 in Berlin, Germany. He came to America with his family in 1945, finally settling in San Francisco, where he graduated from Poly High School and the University of San Francisco. He never forgot those people who did so much for him during the years he was integrating into American culture. He was quick to help others whom God brought to his attention.

 Alex served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1963. In 1959, upon returning to San Francisco after active duty in Georgia, he met Janet White at The Emporium, where both were working. They married in 1962 and raised their boys mostly in San Jose enjoying fishing, camping, back-packing and cycling with them. Alex had an intimate relationship with Christ and found great joy in serving others. He was a Cub Master and Christian Service Brigade leader.  He loved leading Bible studies. A prayer group met in their home for many years. He was an avid reader; his Bible is well-worn. 

 Alex is survived by his loving wife, Janet; sons, Jon (Kandy) of Santa Clara and Gary of San Diego; sister, Helma of San Francisco; and brother, Wolf (Roswitha) Heinisch of Austria. He cherished his granddaughter, Katie Noel Schwendig.  

 Arrangements are entrusted to Allen Mortuary. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Crossroads Church in Turlock.
