Long-time Turlock business owner Andrew Gen died on Oct. 18, at the age of 86. Gen was the co-owner and chef of Golden Hour Restaurant, located at 415 Main Street in downtown Turlock. He and his wife Corine, and partners Sidney and Loretta Gin and Robert and Shirley Chin, opened the Chinese restaurant in 1968. The Turlock City Council recognized Gen’s contribution to downtown commerce when he retired in 2001. Gen was born in the Guangdong province of China.
He was a college student studying democratic law when the communist revolution took over, causing him and his then-fianceé to flee the country. He married Corine in 1953, while in Hong Kong. The couple immigrated to California in 1958. After working in restaurants in the Bay Area for years, Gen opened Golden
Hour Restaurant in Turlock. He spent most of his immigrant life in Turlock, and was very thankful for the warm welcome of the community and the support for the restaurant.
He is survived by his wife, Corine Gen; sons, Ray (Joanne) Gen, Sherman (Bonnie) Gen, Justin Gen, and Sheldon (Laine) Gen; and six grandchildren. Private services will be held in Sacramento.
