Charlie passed away on March 21 in Atwater at the age of 93. Charlie was born in Stamford, Texas on Feb. 1, 1917, to Annie Vaughan Bourland and Charlie Donohoo. He moved to Modesto in 1937, where he met and married Frances Catherine Skarka. They lived in Modesto until moving to Denair in 1943. Charlie lived in Denair until 2009, when he moved to Atwater to live with his daughter. During World War II, he worked at McClellan AFB in Sacramento. He then transferred to Castle Army Air Base in Atwater, being one of the first of 20 civilian workers. He worked in the machine shop, eventually becoming the foreman. He worked in Civil Engineers until his retirement in 1975. He and his wife, who preceded him in death in 1999, were active in square and round dancing for many years. They belonged to the Turlock Steppin’ Pards, Hughson Toes Steppers, Modesto Squarenaders, Merced Romp’N Stompers and the Ceres Rockin’ W Rounders. He was also an avid vegetable gardener.
Charlie is survived by his daughter, Royce Ann and her husband, DJ, of Atwater.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24 at Lakewood Funeral Home, 900 Santa Fe, Hughson, CA.
