Darrel Smith, 55, of Stevinson, passed away unexpectedly at Memorial Hospital.
Darrel was born in Oakland, Calif. to Don and Mary Smith. As a child, he lived in Hayward and Fremont before moving to Stevinson, where he then resided for 26 years, and attended Hilmar High. Darrel moved to Mariposa where he settled in and lived for 10 years, prior to moving back to Turlock a few years ago. He worked for General Motors for many years, until becoming disabled.
Darrel had many hobbies, which included playing the guitar and singing old country music. He loved to write songs and listen to Randy Travis music.  Probably, the fondest memory we all have of Darrel is sitting around the campfire at family reunions every summer listening to him sing and play his guitar. If he wasn't playing his guitar or singing, he was tinkering or trying to fix something. He was incredibly handy and could tackle anything that needed to be fixed.
Darrel is survived by his mother, Mary Smith of Drain, Ore.; children, Dustin Smith, Jimmy Smith and Crystal Bass; siblings, Paula and Sharon Hair; five grandchildren, Zach, Ashlynne, Marcus, Christopher and Elizabeth; and two grandchildren, who have not yet arrived. He was preceded in death by his father.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 21 at Allen Mortuary. A Celebration of Life will also be held on Monday, Dec. 21 at Monte Vista Chapel in the SEB building. The doors will be open at 10 a.m. for refreshments, with the service to begin at 11 a.m. Following the service there will be a time of fellowship, during which lunch will be served.
