Estevao “Steve” Jesus Matos was born in Angola, Africa in 1948. The love he had for Africa ran through his veins his entire life. In Africa he learned to smile, discovered how brave he was, and met the love of his life, Dolores. In 1972 he married Dolores Oliveira and for 40 years they adored each other. In 1978, they journeyed across the Atlantic to America. For 35 years, he lived the American dream. He and Dolores raised their two children, Rosy and Bruno, in Turlock, CA. It was in Turlock that Steve and Dolores opened M&S Portuguese Bakery and spent 30 years working side-by-side. Estevao loved the Portuguese community with all his heart and dedicated the majority of his life to philanthropic, educational, and immigrant support organizations focused on promoting the beauty of the Portuguese language and culture and supporting immigrants. Estevao had an infectious, spectacular smile and an incredible giving spirit. On February 1st, 2013 he joined his precious granddaughter Nina Fredeen in Heaven. Estevao is survived by his courageous wife, children, daughter-in-law Michelle, grandchildren, Teddy and Bryce, and two brothers, Manuel Herculano and Jose Jorge. Estevao and Nina are now holding hands in Heaven. We miss them with aching hearts but are thankful for all their love!
