Filomena Alves Mendes, 92, of Modesto passed away on Jan. 5, 2011, in Modesto. 

She was born on April 29, 1918 in Santa Barbara, Terceira, Azores. She was a homemaker for 47 years and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Modesto and Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church of Turlock. She enjoyed embroidery, singing and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by son, John A. Mendes and his wife, Fatima, of Turlock; daughters, Ida A. Mendes of Modesto and Mary A. Sozinho and her husband, Frank, of Modesto; daughter-in-law, Mary E. Mendes of Modesto; grandchildren, Joe Mendes of Modesto, Sandra Toste of Newman, Steve Mendes of Modesto and Lisa Souza of Hilmar; and nine great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joao Rocha Mendes in April 1991; and son, Joe A. Mendes in 2001.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Whitehurst, Norton & Dias Funeral Chapel. Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 2602 S. Walnut Ave., Turlock. A  Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church. It will be officiated by Father Manuel Sousa.

Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.
