Vernon was born in Seva, Minnesota. At the age of 5, his family moved to Turlock, Calif. where his father, Rev. F. J. Ellman, was called as Pastor of the Nazareth Lutheran Church.
He attended grades 1 thru 6 at Hawthorne Grammar School and grades 7 thru 8 at Lowell Grammar School, both in Turlock. He entered Turlock H.S. in the fall of 1939.
Due to his father’s illness, his family moved to Los Angeles at the start of his Senior year. He graduated from Franklin H.S. in Los Angeles in June of 1943. The United States was at war in 1943.
He was called up for military service that fall, but was rejected due to a heart murmur. He spent the war years working for Lockheed Aircraft Co. After the end of WWII, he enrolled at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn. for 2 years.
He then transferred to UCLA as a junior for his last 2 years, graduating with a B.S. in Business Administration in June of 1949. After graduation he went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad Freight Claim Dept. in Los Angeles.
In 1956 he went to work for North American Aviation in the Engineering Dept, eventually retiring some 27 years later from what had become North American Rockwell B-1 Division. He was married to his wife, Witnee, in Nov. 1983 and retired from North American Rockwell in Jan. 1984.
He moved to Turlock, Calif. in July 1987 where he and Witnee lived an active retired life. After almost 21 years of married life, his wife, Witnee, died suddenly of a stroke in June 2004. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and all his five siblings, Rev. Philip Ellman, Helene Sward, Wilbert Ellman, Paul Ellman, and Gracia Lundgren.
He would want to be remembered as one who loved the Lord and wanted nothing more than to serve the Lord and make a difference for good each day the Lord gave him to live.
