Joseph Stewart shot a four-under par 68 to help the Cal State Stanislaus men’s golf team hold off a furious surge by Chico State and win the Grand Canyon Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz., on Tuesday.
Stewart won individual medalist honors while the No. 16 ranked Warriors captured their third tournament victory in five events this spring. It is their second consecutive tournament win after capturing the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational last week.
“Joseph, our freshman, played great today,” Warriors head coach John Cook said. “This shows that any one on our team can win a tournament.”
His effort led to being named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Stewart was tied for fifth after Monday’s 36 holes and shot a 68 on Tuesday to edge Scott Crichton of Western New Mexico 207-209. Stewart carded a 69-70 for three under par scores.
As a team, the Warriors held an 11-stroke lead over No. 3 Chico State entering the final round. The Wildcats shot a 10-under as a team to rally from behind, but the Warriors held on for the win with a two-under par total on Tuesday.
