Cal State Stanislaus’ Denali Foldager has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Track & Field Female Athlete of the Week for the week of March 22-28, it was announced on Monday.
Foldager, a sophomore from Seward, Alaska, had a productive weekend at the Cal Nevada Championships hosted by UCLA.
On Saturday, Foldager won the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:57, which is a NCAA Division II Championships provisional qualifying time. She bested a field consisting primarily of Division I athletes.
On Sunday, Foldager produced another NCAA provisional qualifying mark after placing sixth in the 1,500-meter run in 4:39.21. She finished behind four Division I athletes and her teammate and twin sister Rubye Foldager, who ran third in a time of 4:37.33.
Other highlights for the Warriors at the Cal Nevada Championships include Jeni Cunha placing fourth in the shot put with a toss of 39 feet, 6 1/2, while 4x100 men’s relay team of Abdullah Dosu, Jesse Ooten, Luther Bell and Jerome Johnson turned in a season-best time of 42.53 seconds.
Warriors baseball earns series sweep
David Contreras went 3-for-3 and Eric Cendejas tossed seven-plus strong innings as the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team beat Cal State Monterey Bay, 5-1, to complete the series sweep on Sunday.
With the sweep, the Warriors move up to a tie for fifth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings as they improved to 15-14 overall and 11-9 in CCAA play.
The win is the Warriors’ 14th consecutive win over the Otters. Stanislaus also increased its dominance over CSUMB now with a 19-1 all-time record.
Contreras led off the fourth with a solo homer to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. It was his fourth home run of the season.
Women’s tennis captures fifth straight match
The Warriors swept doubles competition and won four of six singles matches as No. 20 Cal State Stanislaus defeated Cal State L.A, 7-2, on Saturday.
With their fifth straight win, the Warriors improved to 5-4 overall and 5-1 in the CCAA.
Vanesa Reibstein won both of her matches, including a 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to lead the Warriors as they keep pace with CCAA leader UC San Diego (4-0 in conference play).
The Warriors won all three doubles matches with Verena Preikschas and Katie Eng improving to 6-0 in conference play with a 8-2 win over L.A.’s top duo Dora Kiss and Linda Majzlikova. Reibstein teamed with Brianna McClintock at No. 2 doubles for a win. Arina Polovnikova and Heather Cotter also won at No. 3.
Warriors softball ends tourney run with loss
Cal State Stanislaus’ run at the Tournament of Champions ended on Sunday as the Warriors dropped to Saint Martin’s 3-2 in a silver bracket game.
The Warriors ended the weekend 2-4 and fell to 8-25-1 overall. Stanislaus was 5-7 in its last 12 games dating back to last weekend’s conference series split with Cal State San Bernardino.
