Warriors shine in 1500m at Johnny Mathis Invite

Marina Ghabbour has put herself in the position to possibly run at another national championship event. The Cal State Stanislaus senior ran a provisional qualifying time in the 1,500-meter run at Saturday's Johnny Mathis Invitational at San Francisco State.
Ghabbour's time of 4:30.36 is almost five seconds faster than the provisional qualifying standard time for the event in the 2013 NCAA Track and Field Championship in Pueblo, Colo.
Ghabbour is coming off a performance at the indoor championships as part of the distance medley relay team which finished second.
Also highlighting the women's team's day on Saturday included a win in the javelin by Channing Wilson, whose throw of 135 feet-1 inch is also an improved mark for the NCAAs.
In the 800-meter run, Aman Hundal narrowly missed the "B" mark with a time of 2:14.50. The NCAA provisional qualifying time is 2:14.40.
Other top three finishes include a third place discus throw mark by Noel Wright (132-7), who also placed third in the shot put (36-3), while the relay teams came in second in the 4x100 (49.29 seconds) and the 4x400 (3:55.56).
Dawson Vorderbruegge and Terrance Ellis highlighted the Warriors' men's track and field team's day at the Johnny Mathis Invitational.
In pole vault, Caleb Monticalvo also improved his NCAA championship qualifying height as well by winning the event with a clearance of 16 feet, 1 3/4 inches. Kyle Maxwell was third (15-1) and Mike Ortega (14-7 1/4) finished fifth.
In the 1,500-meter run, where Vorderbruegge earned All-American status last year in the same event, by winning in a time of 3:50.60. The NCAA "B" qualifying time is 3:52.00, which was also surpassed by Ellis as he finished in 3:51.89.
Josh Uikilifi won the shot put with a heave of 55 feet while other highlights include a fourth place finish by Thomas Gesser in the hammer (180-2) and a fifth place showing by Uikilifi in the discus (148-5).
