The Turlock Historical Society will host a replay of the "Big Game" of 1949 between the Turlock High Bulldogs and the Modesto High Panthers at 7 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Berg Hall, Covenant Village, 2125 N. Olive Ave., Turlock. The event is free to the public, with light refreshments to be served.Afterward, there will be a group discussion about the rivalry game, as well as a chance to meet some of the former players.
This is an opportunity to see one of the oldest rivalries in the state. According to the Society, the game used to be played on Thanksgiving Day, forcing Turlock mothers to schedule the turkey dinner for before or after the game, which started in 1920.
Commentary on the game has been added to the silent, color film. A DVD of the game can be purchased from the Society.
“If you or your relatives attended Turlock or Modesto schools in the late 40s,” the Society stated in a press release, “you may spot someone you know in the film. The halftime show is included in the movie and football fans can compare the old plays, rules and equipment to today's game of football.”This year’s game between Turlock and Modesto is on Sept. 17 at Joe Debely Stadium.
