On her very first attempt in Thursday’s triple jump finals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV-V Championships at Modesto Junior College, Hilmar High junior Morgan McFaddin felt pain in her right ankle.

She sprained it in the third phase.

“It hurt pretty bad,” she said. But not bad enough to stop her from eventually landing a mark of 33 feet, 10 1/2 inches — which resulted in a third-place finish and a spot in next week’s Section’s Masters Meet at Sacramento City College. McFaddin continued to compete with a bad ankle later in the evening, as she completed the first leg of the 4x400-meter relay in less than 60 seconds to help her Yellowjackets to a fifth-place showing with a time of 4 minutes, 15.22 seconds. That team, which also included Melissa Armendariz and Savannah and Oliviah Gemperle earned a spot at the Masters.

Hilmar teammate Isamar Millian qualified for the Masters for the second consecutive year after achieving a 33-04 mark in the triple jump. Oliviah Gemperle also secured a spot at the Section meet in the high jump, where she tied for second after clearing 5 feet.

The top six advanced on to the Masters, which is one step away from the CIF State Championships.

On the boys side, Denair High’s Colin Sosa ran the 300-meter hurdles in 42.41 seconds to finish fifth — enough to qualify for the Masters.

Complete results for the Section’s Division I Championships at Elk Grove, where Pitman and Turlock athletes competed late Friday, weren’t available by press time.
