The Delhi High football team won its season opener at home in shutout fashion, dominating Galt High by a score of 20-0, after an all around impressive performance by the defense.

“We played really good team defense, team tackling. We made some mistakes, minor ones, but all and all played well, first game out and glad to be 1-0,” Delhi head coach Rod McCombs said. “We are looking for fine tuning this upcoming week and, hopefully, we will be crisp by the end of the week.”

It was 6-0 just before halftime when Galt attempted a 40 yard field goal to go on the board, but Reinaldo Medina blocked it with less than two seconds to end the possible threat and keep the shutout intact.

The defense continued its dominance in the second half while the offense turned it up to score two more touchdowns and extend the lead by the fourth quarter.

Starting quarterback Garret Thomas was battling strep throat, but managed to be efficient going 5-for-6 for 59 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT while also rushing for a TD.

Hayden Steger had 13 carries for 54 yards, Ricco McCombs had 9 carries for 69 yards and Joel Cantu had 11 carries for 74 yards to end the game.
