Pitman girls basketball tournament starts off well

Jessica Smith of Pitman High finished Thursday’s game with a team-high 20 points as the Pride toppled Central Valley High, 77-18 (CANDY PADILLA/The Journal).

The Pitman Pride varsity girls basketball team started off their tournament with a victory on Thursday when they took on Central Valley High.

Led by Jessica Smith and Haley Hamasaki’s game-high in points scored, the Pride managed to handle CV from the onset as they won with ease, 77-18.

The win also marked the seventh victory of the season for the Pride and head coach Dustin Curtiss after their first 13 games.

It was also Pitman’s second straight win.

Smith finished with 20 points while Hamasaki added 20 of her own.

 

Pride boys basketball split games at Oakdale Rotary Classic

The Oakdale Boys Basketball Tournament kicked off on Wednesday and the Pitman Pride varsity squad started off with a win, but followed with a loss on Thursday to split after their second day.

In their first game on Wednesday, Pitman snapped Ripon Christian’s three-game win streak by pulling off a second half comeback to secure the 71-59 win.

RC went up by a point at the half at 32-31, before Pitman outscored their opponent in the final two quarters, 40-27.

On Thursday, following two straight wins, Pitman took on future league opponent Downey High.

Downey went up 4-0 before Pitman finished the opening quarter with a 16-8 run.

This led to momentum carrying into halftime as Pitman led, 36-28.

In the second half Downey went on to outscore Pitman 51-38 as they came out on top 79-74, securing their second straight win and ninth in 14 games played.

Pitman is 6-7 after their first 13 games played.

 

Holiday Hoops starts off 1-2 for Turlock boys basketball

The Modesto Christian Holiday Hoops Tournament kicked off this Wednesday and Turlock High had a rough start for the week — going 1-2 after dropping back-to-back games.

Turlock started the tournament with a win after they toppled St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Wednesday, 62-59.

This win was followed by a tough game against a top 34 opponent in state—Weston Ranch.

In that game on Thursday, Turlock fell 81-46, setting up a Friday matchup with Clovis West.

Clovis West ended up taking down Turlock after a 97-79 final.

Turlock is 7-8 after Friday’s loss to Clovis West.
