Denair Coyotes
Head coach: Therion Gregory (ninth year)
Assistant: Jim Wagner
Top athletes: Kevin Cotter (jumps), Kyle Fike (jumps), David Gama (throws), Richard Delgadillo (sprints) and Jacob Wagner (hurdles) for boys. Kristen Wade (sprints) and Dacy Lewis (400 meters) for girls.
Outlook: This season, the Coyotes have one of the biggest groups of track athletes since Therion Gregory started coaching nine years ago. The boys team is especially large, as the Coyotes boast around 25 athletes. That’s enough to make Gregory believe they can be serious contenders for the Southern League title, which hasn’t been won by the Coyotes in decades. The boys have plenty of experience and talent returning this season with Kevin Cotter, Kyle Fike, David Gama, Richard Delgadillo and Jacob Wagner leading the charge. As for the girls, Gregory said it’ll be more about individual accomplishments as the Coyotes won’t have enough athletes to compete with the best teams in the league. Gregory added that it’s tough to get a girls team together in the spring, when softball and girls soccer take a good chunk of the female athletes at the school.

Top athletes: Martin Mordea (200 and 400 meters), Daniel Schultz (distance and long jump), Austin Morelli (discus and shot put), Jordan Gustafson (discus and shot put) for boys. Emily Retemeyer (sprinter), Allison Ulrich (sprinter), Hope Tinely (sprinter), Paige Ulrich (100, 200 and 400 meters and relay events) for girls.
Outlook: Even in only their first year, the Turlock Christian Eagles already have some impact athletes in the Southern League. Martin Mordea is ranked No. 1 in both the 200 and 400 meters, and he’s a sophomore. Other key athletes are Austin Morelli and Jordan Gustason in the throwing events, as well as Daniel Schultz in the middle distance and long jump events. As the for the girls, Emily Retemeyer (sprints), Allison Ulrich (sprints), Hope Tinely lead the way, while Paige Ulrich is one of the best 100, 200 and 400 meter runners in the county. But coach Aaron King said, “We don’t have a lot, because we’re just starting.”

Top returners: Alyssa McFaddin (long jumps and sprints), Melissa Armendariz (sprint and relays), McKenzie Souza (hurdles, shot put and discus), Morgan McFaddin (800 and 400 meters and relays), Riley Harris (hurdles sprints and jumps) for girls. Jeffery Souza (distance), Travis Price (middle distance), Eduardo Valledez (distance), Devin Azevedo (throws).
Top newcomer: Quinton McCown (jumps, sprints)
Outlook: This year, Hilmar coach Clement Labrouche will be dealing with opposites, as his girl athletes are aiming for their four consecutive Western Athletic Conference title before going back to the Trans-Valley League next season, while the boys will be going through a rebuilding process. The boys have only eight athletes, with football and basketball star Quinton McCown trying out track for the first time in the sprint and jumping events. Leading for the girls is Morgan McFaddin, who was the only Yellowjacket to qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championship last year in the triple jump. McFaddin will try something different this season, as the sophomore will also be focusing on girls soccer.
