Turlock and Pitman boys’ golf tied for fourth at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Divisional tournament on Monday with a score of 435 at Elk Horn in Stockton.
When the sun set and the final scores came in, only Turlock's Bailey Old and Preston Magina had scores that had set them up in the top six, and earned themselves a spot for the Master's tournament on Monday.
“We would have liked to go as a full team but we didn't shoot well today,” said Turlock coach Jason Boswell. “To have two kids move on is great, especially for these two kids who have worked hard all year. They are honest in their play and I could not ask for better players to represent our program.”
Bailey secured his spot with a score of 80 while Magina was one stroke behind at 81.
Turlock and Pitman finished behind Lodi, Gregori and St. Mary's.
“They represented our school and league well,” said Pitman coach Matt Jeans. “Of course, we didn't finish how we wanted to. I'm not sure any of our guys would be satisfied with any outcome other than 1st place. That just shows the competitive mindset these young men have.”
The top scorer for Pitman was Trevor Showen with an 84, missing the cut by one stroke.
Bryan Rouse shot a 90 and Chandler Hedrick shot an 86. Nathaniel Coutinho finished with an 87 and Steven Bishop shot an 88. Drew Fusi had a 92.
“Trevor [Showen] just missed the cut and this season has come to an end but our boys were successful,” said Jeans.
“Some days are just not your day and on another given day we have the ability to move on as a team,” Boswell added.
The Master's tournament will take place at The Reserve at Spanos Park at a time yet to be determined on Monday.
