Mallory Patino’s reaction after the 300-meter hurdles run was priceless. She stuck both arms in the air, holding the pose for a couple seconds. Just moments earlier, she was able to beat out a foe.

With the little breath she had left after the race, she shouted, “What?”

With a personal-best time of 47.17 seconds, the Turlock High sophomore hurdler edged out Atwater High’s Courtney Bernatz — someone Patino had never beaten before. It was a glorious moment among many highlights at Friday’s Central California Conference Championships at Debely Stadium, where the athletes’ top priority was to finish in the top five of their respective events in order to qualify for next week’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Championships at Elk Grove High on Wednesday and Friday.

“It was a huge ‘oh, my goodness! I just did that’ moment,” said Patino, who a Section qualifier last season. “If I can do that in this league, what can I do in Section? Can I run in college? I tried so hard to finally beat her.”

Patino was among a handful of athletes from Turlock and Pitman high schools to complete the day with individual titles. Pitman High’s Caitlin O’Connell had the most, however, as she won the high jump, long jump and triple jump events.

Kelsee Derr won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.73 seconds, just beating Patino and her runner-up time of 15.58. Pitman’s Kyndel Fletcher and Turlock’s Nicole Cipponeri both cleared the height of 9 feet, 11 inches in the pole vault, though Fletcher won based on least amount of misses. And the 4x100-meter relay team of Jasmine Roberson, Aman Hundal, Hailey Stroud and Derr won the race with a school-record time of 49.45 seconds.

On the boys side, Pitman’s Sean Donnelly took home the discus title after tossing 148 feet, 3 inches.
