It was a day of redemption on Thursday for Turlock High’s Jordan Bean and Aldair Lima at the Central California Conference boys Doubles Tournament at Merced High. Just two days after early elimination in the CCC boys Singles Tournament—Bean in the first round and Lima in the second—the Bulldog pair teamed up and barreled through the competition, defeating all opponents in straight sets en route to a tournament championship.

“From the beginning of the year they said they wanted the opportunity to play together in the doubles tournament,” Turlock’s head coach Juan Alaniz said. “We knew that if they wanted to go to sections, it’d be in doubles.”

Lima’s athleticism and ability to cover the court combined with Bean’s strong service game and height in the perfect storm of back and front court dominance. The two blew by Buhach Colony High’s Ricardo Fierro and Alex Avila, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round before a second round matchup against teammates Kris Melgard and Alex Lima where they earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

“It’s a good combination between them,” Alaniz said. “I thought they would win, but I didn’t know it would be in straight sets.”

Bean and Lima continued to work their opponents and control the net as they put down Golden Valley High’s Leng Moua and Leo Gallegos, 6-4, 6-0, in the semi-finals. The tournament run was completed in the finals with a 6-1, 7-5 defeat over Cougars Thomas Becker and Adrian Garcia.

“It’s very exciting,” Alaniz said of the tournament victory.

Bean and Lima will now compete in the CIF San Joaquin Section Tournament on May 2 at Johnson Ranch in Roseville. Before that, however, the pair will compete alongside the rest of their team in the Division I Team Section playoffs at Tracy West High on Tuesday.
