Welcome to ‘The Lock’
The lock
The Lock, a new 7 on 7 and 5 on 5, non-contact football program in Turlock, drew over 80 kids at their first tryout on Dec. 3. They are hoping for similar numbers at their Dec. 10 tryout.
A new 7 on 7 and 5 on 5 football program has landed in Turlock. Tabbed as “The Lock,” which is short for the city’s name, the program consists of several Turlock High School coaches hoping to give young players to continue developing their skills in the offseason.

The Lock will be hosting 7 on 7 tryouts at Joe Debely Stadium for 8U, 10U, 12U and high school aged players on Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the program’s 5 on 5 a.m., which is for lineman, will have tryouts for 14U kids and high schoolers during that same time.

Waivers are available the day of tryouts and must be signed before sessions begin. It is free to try out, though there is a fee of $300 for 7 on 7 and a $250 fee for 5 on 5 players to compete for those who make the cut. There will be 14 to 15 kids per team.

The Lock focuses on speed, agility and football IQ. It also affords children who do not want to play tackle an opportunity to still enjoy the sport they love.

Coach Darron Silva explained that 7 on 7 is a fast-growing sport, as it has been added to the list of sports expected to take place at the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“Once the school season ends and all the youth seasons end, there haven't been many opportunities for guys to continue working on their game and sharpening their skills. This gives them a chance to learn the game at a different pace, gives them a chance to travel and get out of town, give themselves some exposure and probably most important, to network and build relationships,” he said.

During their season, The Lock will travel throughout California to compete.

“Come ready to compete and have fun,” Silva said.
