A combination of strong pitching and solid hits helped the American East Rangers take the sting out of the National AAA’s Bees ball play Friday night and clinch the City Championship minor league title, 11-1.
The championship win capped a perfect season for the Rangers, who went 23-0.
“This was a full team effort,” Rangers Coach Steve Abrams said of his team’s victory. “Everybody played really well. I have to give credit to the other team, they battled hard.
“We were able to jump on them early and that gave us a lot of confidence,” Abrams said.
The Rangers did get a quick start Friday night at Julien field, tallying up four runs in the first inning.
Soren Jerner led the Rangers in scoring for the night. He put the first score up for the Rangers with an RBI single in the first and blasted a triple in the bottom of the third that brought in another run. Jerner stole home off a wild pitch the following play, bringing the score to 6-1.
Pitcher Clay Abrams kept the Bee’s bats at bay for most of the night, recording seven strike outs.
Though they were beleaguered by errors, the Bees put up a strong duo in pitcher Sarah Garcia and catcher Katie Green.
Garcia pitched four innings and struck out five.
Green brought in the Bees’ single run for the game in the second inning, with a solid hit up the middle that landed in the sweet spot between centerfield and second and brought in one running, bringing the score to 4-1.
“There were a lot of errors made that we hadn’t seen from them all season,” said Bees Coach John Garcia. “We had some good plays and that big hit by Katie Green, but we just didn’t get it started.”
The game ended in the bottom of the fifth when the Rangers tallied their 11th run.
The Rangers will play in the Tournament of Champions, day and time to be announced. The Bees will go up against Los Banos Tuesday at Soderquist field.
