The Rockies wasted no time getting on the board when they faced the Diamondbacks on Thursday in the second round of the National League Little League playoff tournament. Two first-inning runs put the Rockies in the lead but it was a nine-run third inning that gave them the 13-3 win and a guaranteed spot in today’s National League Championship.

“We didn’t expect to dominate but we expected to win,” Rockies head coach Kevin Lima said.

Jack Wheeland and Garret Lema were responsible for the Rockies’ first inning runs but it was Andres Grande’s pitching that gave his team its confidence and kept the Diamondbacks off balance. After giving up a run in the top of the third inning, the Rockies responded with a RBI from Garret Estrada and another Wheeland RBI to maintain a two point lead.

“Our team never gets down on themselves or shows emotion during the game,” Lima said. “They know they can get the job done.”

The Rockies completed their job in the fourth inning with four singles and three doubles. Marino Cabrero notched the final two runs of the game to seal the deal and send the Rockies into today’s match up with either the Nationals or a rematch with the Diamondbacks

“They’re crushing the ball, so our hitting is there,” Lima said. “I feel really good about our chances to get to the city championship.”
