The 10- to 11-year-olds of the Turlock American All-Stars found themselves in a humbling hole.
But the boys didn’t panic, eventually prevailing with a 5-3 win over the Turlock Nationals on Wednesday night in a winners’ bracket game of the District 10 tournament at Soderquist Park. The Turlock Americans were down 3-0 after three innings, but came back with timely hitting from Daniel Fareria and timely pitching from Alden Northquist.
Their effort helped the Turlock Americans to set a matchup with Madera late Friday, with the winner earning a spot in the championship round.
“Turlock National beat us in the first three innings,” Turlock American coach Randy Hayner said. “But we came back and battled back.”
Hayner also commented that the Turlock Nationals provided a competitive game, giving his team some doubts early on. But with Northquist coming in during the latter half of the game to provide “lights out” pitching and Fareria smacking a two-out shot to right field for a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning, the Turlock Americans escaped with the win.
The game was one of many Little League All-Stars games involving Turlock teams at different levels. A handful more took place late Friday night in the league’s respective district tournament.
