A Turlock man is facing vehicular manslaughter charges after a fatal crash Sunday that claimed the life of a Modesto man.

The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old Derek Rocha.

Antonio Vitor Lourenco, 27, was arraigned Tuesday in Stanislaus County Superior Court on a charge of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He entered a not guilty plea.

The collision was reported at 3 a.m. Sunday in an outlying area of Modesto on Vivian Road, north of Zeering Road.

Lourenco was driving a 1989 Honda south on Vivian Road at an approximate speed of 55 mph. According to the California Highway Patrol, Lourenco was unable to negotiate a posted 20 mph curve because of his intoxication level and rolled his vehicle.

The vehicle slammed into an almond tree on the passenger side.

Rocha, who was not wearing a seat belt according to the CHP, was ejected from the Honda as it rolled and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lourenco was able to extract himself from the vehicle by climbing through the broken windshield.
