A Modesto man was taken into custody Wednesday morning after firing his gun at a funeral service and prompting a brief lockdown at a nearby Turlock school, the Turlock Police Department reported.
The suspect was identified as Emmanuel Yacoub, 69, of Modesto. He was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm.
Just before 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the police department got a call from an armed security guard at Turlock Memorial Park at 575 N. Soderquist Dr., reporting that a man had just fired multiple hots into the air. The guard said it was during a funeral service and that the man fired the shots near several other mourners.
The guard was able to provide the police department with a detailed description of the suspect and the vehicle that he left in, said Turlock Police spokeswoman Dominique Sanchez.
Multiple officers responded to the area and located the vehicle nearby. They performed a high-risk stop and placed Yacoub in handcuffs at gunpoint, Sanchez said.
A probable search was conducted on his vehicle and officers located a firearm.
The gunshots and the subsequent arrest prompted a brief lockdown at Osborn Elementary School as a precaution, Sanchez said.
