Officer injured during arrest

A Turlock Police officer attempting to take into custody an man with an arrest warrant sustained an injury to his eye, the Turlock Police Department reported.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Dec. 23, an officer on patrol in the area of Spruce and Angelus streets spotted Lewis Gastelo, 44, riding a bicycle. The officer stopped Gastelo for a bike violation and discovered he had a warrant for his arrest.

The officer was placing Gastelo into custody, when Gastelo began to fight back. He was able to break free from the officer and started to run away, but was quickly apprehended again by the officer.

Gastelo continued to fight, even as additional officers arrived at the scene. During the struggle one officer sustained a cut to the eye, the police department reported.

Gastelo was arrested for the warrant and resisting arrest.

The officer received medical attention for the cut and returned to work later that same shift.
