A Turlock man was killed in a suspected drunk driving collision and a Modesto man was placed under arrest for the death, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The deceased was identified as Ruedas Rafael Del Rio, 55, of Turlock.

The collision occurred at 2:35 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Carpenter Road and W. Main Street.

Del Rio was driving a 2002 Toyota Corolla eastbound on W. Main Street and had stopped at a stop sign. He then proceeded into the intersection, which is when his vehicle was hit by a 2013 Acura.

The front of the Acura struck the Toyota on the right side, forcing it across the intersection and causing it to overturn. Del Rio, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene from his injuries, according to the CHP.

The driver of the Acura is suspected of failing to stop at the posted stop sign and driving under the influence. The driver was identified as Raul Campos, 24, of Modesto.

Campos and his passenger Reina Reyes, 19, of Modesto sustained minor injuries and were both treated at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

Campos was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on a felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter, two felony counts of driving under the influence causing injury or death, and a misdemeanor count of driving without a valid driver’s license. The case against Campos also includes a filing that he could possibly be facing a third strike offense.

Campos remains in custody in lieu of a $250,000 bail.
