Turlock Police arrest one
emergency

A woman was shot early Sunday during an armed robbery in downtown Turlock, the Turlock Police Department reported.

The woman sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The shooting happened around 1:50 a.m. behind the businesses in the 400 block of E. Main Street.

The police department said the woman and a man were victims of an armed robbery behind Staley’s Club at 426 E. Main St. The woman was shot during the course of the robbery. The suspect fled the scene and the woman was taken into the bar to wait for emergency services.

Officers quickly responded and located a suspect vehicle leaving the area and initiated a stop. A man in the vehicle, Steven Sawyer, 29, of Patterson was identified as the robber and was taken into custody.

He was arrested on suspicion of robbery, possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle, and possession of a stolen firearm and booked into jail.

Several people claiming to have been in the bar prior to the shooting posted on social media that a man had been told to leave the establishment and that when he was leaving, he showed a gun tucked in the waistband of his pants.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the case and it’s possible there may be a second suspect involved in the incident.
