The driver who went the wrong way on Highway 99 and died in a fiery head-on crash has been identified as a Turlock resident.
The deceased was identified as Armando Beltran, 54, of Turlock.
The collision happened at 3:18 a.m. Tuesday on northbound Highway 99, near Lander Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Beltran was driving a white sedan southbound in a northbound lane at an unknown rate of speed when the vehicle collided head-on with a Tesla Model Y that was traveling north at approximately 70 miles per hour.
The impact sent the sedan spinning in a southerly direction. It overturned onto the right side and caught on fire, according to the CHP. Beltran died at the scene.
The Tesla came to a rest facing west across two northbound lanes. It had sustained major front-end damage.
The driver of the Tesla, Thomas Guerrero, 37, of Escalon sustained major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Emanuel Medical Center.
A 6-year-old boy in the Tesla was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera with moderate injuries. The investigation is ongoing, though the CHP does believe alcohol was a factor in the collision.
