TURLOCK — From a record-breaking 312 entries, jurors have selected 94 works for this summer’s Carnegie Art Showcase, the annual juried exhibition at the Carnegie Arts Center in Downtown Turlock. The show, which awards $2,350 in prize money, will run July 7 through Aug. 29 in the center’s Ferrari Gallery. A free public reception is scheduled for July 10 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Artists from across Central California and beyond submitted work in a wide range of media, including painting, watercolor, drawing, pastels, prints, ceramics, wood, photography, fiber arts, collage, mixed media and installation. The final group represents 64 artists from 29 communities: Altaville, Atwater, Avila Beach, Clovis, Coalinga, Coarsegold, Elk Grove, Fairfax, Groveland, Gustine, Hickman, Hughson, Keyes, Kingsburg, La Grange, Livingston, Lodi, Mariposa, Merced, Modesto, North Fork, Oakdale, Oakhurst, Patterson, Sacramento, Stockton, Tracy, Turlock and Woodlake.
Carnegie Arts Center Director Lisa McDermott said the Showcase continues to grow in reach and diversity. “We are reaching more artists every year and seeing an increasing variety in the works we get to feature,” she said. “Works by many well-known and established regional artists can be seen in the show, but the opportunity also attracts young artists and draws in artists from farther afield. Several artists are appearing in the CAC galleries for the first time, and this is what makes the show unique and exciting every year.”
This year’s judges were painter John Karl Claes of Turlock, printmaker Monique Wales of Oakhurst, and sculptor and mixed media artist Matthew Warner-Davies of Merced.
John Kifer of North Fork received Best of Show for his acrylic painting Leap of Faith. Awards of Excellence went to Larry Lew of Modesto for Dancing Cranes (wood) and Kristina Reid of Tracy for In the Cool of the Evening (acrylic). Awards of Merit were presented to William Calvin of Modesto, Amber Gariety of Modesto, Chella Gonsalves of Modesto, and Marilyn Wear of Turlock. Honorable mentions were awarded to William Conrad of Turlock, Hannelore Fischer of Mariposa, Carolyn Hartling of Coarsegold, Loren Lukens of Merced, Cathy O’Donnell of La Grange, and Mikaela Purcell of Keyes.
