AMERICAN LEGION CENTENNIAL
American Legion
American Legion members and guests celebrated the organization's 100th anniversary with a special dinner on Friday (CANDY PADILLA/The Journal).

Commander Wardee "Gunner" Bruce and John Haggstrom of the American Legion Rex Ish Post #88 celebrate the 100th year of the American Legion with special guests from the city and county and 100-year-old veteran Otis Ware.  Post 88 invited the public to join the celebration and served a free steak dinner and dessert.

"I don't think we can thank them (veterans) enough for everything they have done for us," said Turlock City Councilman and Vice Mayor Gil Esquer.

The public can support Post 88 on Friday nights by visiting the bar or coming out to a home cooked dinner made by Haggstrom.

Remembering a ‘fierce defender of freedom’
Memorial Day 1
During a Memorial Day ceremony held on Monday at Turlock Memorial Park, Marsha Gonsalves, with the support of her husband Larry, shares memories of their son, Sgt. 1st Class Chad Gonsalves, who died on Feb. 13, 2006, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee north of Deh Rawod in central Afghanistan (KRISTINA HACKER/The Journal).
Every Memorial Day, locals put on their red, white and blue attire, maybe don a red poppy in remembrance of the fallen, and make their way to Turlock Memorial Park cemetery.
