Those looking to improve their public speaking and leadership skills now have an opportunity to be a part of the Turlock Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural Toastmasters International Club, which is launching this Thursday.

The importance of clear communication is universal evidenced by the fact that there are 14,650 Toastmasters clubs in 126 countries. Committed to developing leaders who can clearly articulate themselves, Toastmasters provides a supportive environment for members to refine their public speaking skills and in turn build their confidence in other areas of life.

It was after Turlock Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Sharon Silva spoke as a guest at a local Toastmasters club meeting that friend John Rogers encouraged her to start a local chapter.

“He didn’t have to push too hard,” laughed Silva who studied Communications in college. “I truly believe if you can communicate and articulate yourself clearly you are better equipped in all areas of life.”

Seeing the value for such a club, particularly in the business community, Silva took steps to launch the chapter. Whether it is one nerve-racking speech or a part of an individual’s job description, those looking to hone their public speaking skills will now have a platform.

“The Chamber is really all about supporting and endorsing business and being there for the support of the business community,” explained Silva. “What better way than to ensure that business leaders can speak not only to one another but to the public. And we’re opening the meeting to not just members but to anyone who wants to become more fluent in conversation.”

The inaugural Toastmaster International meeting will take place from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Turlock Chamber Conference Room located at 115 S. Golden State Blvd. RSVP to Sharon Silva by calling 632-2221.
