Collision outside of Keyes results in one fatality
emergency

A Gustine man was killed Monday afternoon when he was thrown from his all-terrain vehicle after being hit by a truck in a collision near Keyes.

The collision was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 1:20 p.m. Monday. It happened on Washington Road, just north of Taylor Road.

The deceased was identified as Daniel Hernandez, 50, of Gustine.

Hernandez was driving a 2012 Kubota ATV southbound on Washington Road when the vehicle was struck from behind by a 2019 Dodge Ram driven by Eric Mays, 30, of Turlock.

Hernandez was not wearing a safety belt and the force of the impact threw him off the vehicle and onto the road. He sustained a fatal injury and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Mays sustained minor injuries to his chest, but declined medical treatment at the scene.

The CHP is still investigating the collision and has not yet determined if Hernandez had just pulled out onto the road just prior to the collision.

Alcohol and drugs were not considered to be factors in the crash.

"The CHP would like to remind all motorists, seatbelts, when worn properly, have the ability to save your life when involved in a collision," the CHP said in a news release.
