Covenant Care Home Health and Hospice in Turlock was presented a check for more than $26,000 on Thursday, the proceeds from the inaugural Grand Oak/Covenant Care Hospice Crab Feed.

Grand Oak owner Ed Yonan and daughter Sabrina Yonan, who manages the venue, along with Lee Ann Bettencourt and Shari Yagi of Lifestyle Realty, presented the check to event coordinator Cathy Morelli and her team at Covenant Care.

Sisters Bettencourt and Yagi dealt with Covenant Care on a personal level, and were impressed with the care their loved one received.

“Covenant Care came in and took care of our mom,” said Bettencourt. “They made it so much easier.”

“And they told us, almost down to the hour, when she was going to pass,” added Yagi. “So, all five of her children were able to be there and we had our hands on her when she passed.”

So, Covenant Care became THE choice when they were trying to find a non-profit to assist.

“I especially want to thank the Grand Oak, the Yonan family, Shari Yagi, and Lee Ann Bettencourt,” said Morelli, who also pointed out that Covenant Care administrator Ronda Malmberg played a key role. “They came up with idea to have this crab feed to benefit a non-profit in our community, and we were pleased they chose Covenant Care Hospice.”

The event was held March 23 at the Grand Oak Banquet Hall and Event Center, 1450 N. Soderquist Rd., and featured crab, pasta, salad and bread. Plus, there was a dessert auction, which accounted for about 40 percent — about $11,000 — of the $26,677 that was donated.

“My daughter’s chocolate chip cookies went for $800,” said Ed Yonan, who also owns Yonan’s Jewelers and Yonan’s Floral in town.

Also, keys were sold for $20, giving the buyer a chance to unlock a chest that contained a diamond necklace.
