A Turlock family escaped unharmed a freeway collision that sent a Winton man to the hospital with major injuries, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The collision happened around 11:30 a.m. Sunday on northbound Highway 99, north of Sierra Drive in Modesto.

Jose Valdizon, 42, of Turlock was driving a 2007 Toyota northbound on the highway and was slowing down because of a hazard in the road, the CHP reported.

Behind the Toyota was 56-year-old William Dalton of Winton on a 1996 Kawasaki motorcycle.

Dalton hit the brakes on the motorcycle, but was unable to avoid the Toyota. The front of the motorcycle struck the rear of the Toyota.

The force of the impact ejected Dalton from the motorcycle. He sustained major injuries and was transported by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center for treatment, according to the CHP.

The driver and the passengers in the Toyota — Xiomara Valdizon, 21, of Turlock and Stephanie Valdizon, 14, of Turlock — were not injured.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the collision.
