History of business:  A family’s love for food, and a menu filled with special recipes, has resulted in a fusion of Mexican and South American cuisine.

“Mundo’s started off as a fast food restaurant with made as you order burritos and rice bowls," said owner Gerardo Gonzales. “ In 2007, Mundo’s upgraded the menu and its services into a fine dining restaurant where families and people from all ages can enjoy.”

Mundo’s dishes including the Chino Latino rolls and Latin pasta dishes, have since developed a bit of a reputation in the community.

“We are not your average Mexican restaurant,” said Gonzales.  “We offer unique recipes that will not be found anywhere else in Turlock.  We go where no other Latin grill has gone before.  We have different varieties in our menu selection that will appeal to different taste buds.”

Mundo’s Latin Grill, then owned by Mundo Villapudua, first opened in 2005 with the help of brothers Carlos and Mario Villapudua.

“Carlos created many of the dishes that we serve today.  His unique taste and his eye for creativity has transformed the way people eat our food today,” said Gonzales.

In 2012 Gonzales took over the restaurant as the former owner moved to Texas to start his own restaurant business.

“Mundo had so much pride in this restaurant that he wanted to make sure its new owner would continue on its same legacy,” said Gonzales.

Business specialty:

Mundo’s Latin Grill offers gourmet delights like Mango Herbed Chicken and Pollo Durango, and Garden Fresco Burrito for its vegetarian lovers.

“For the very first time, Mundo has a daily lunch special from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” said Gonzales.

Pitman High graduate Chrys Kamesch and school FFA advisor Trenton Kemps pose with the custom bench that Kamesch created in honor of the Lourenco family, a project that won top honors at last week’s Stanislaus County Fair (CHRISTOPHER CORREA/The Journal).
As thousands took to Turlock over the last two weeks for the 2025 Stanislaus County Fair, the absence of a family that was incredibly dedicated to the community and especially its agricultural activities was heavily felt by several attendees. That included members of the Pitman High School FFA chapter.
