Planet Fitness joins Turlock fitness scene in up and coming shopping center
Planet Fitness
Planet Fitness, a fitness chain known for its non-intimidating environment and affordable membership prices, is currently under construction at its new West Main Street location. The gym is slated to open June 1.

Grocery Outlet has been an unofficial standalone anchor of the West Main shopping center for several months, but business is beginning to boom with the opening of a Dollar Tree and soon to be Planet Fitness.

Dollar Tree opened its doors to the public on April 16 as the third of the popular retail chain stores in Turlock and come June 1, Planet Fitness will add another establishment to the center.

Planet Fitness currently has a storefront in the shopping center where locals can learn more about the gym's unique approach to fitness and complete their membership work prior to the gym’s opening. More than half of Planet Fitness clients are first time gym users so the chain focuses on creating a comfortable, non-intimidating environment said Manager and Operating Partner Brent Linsky.

"We are the 'judgment free zone' so we're not catering to body building or power-lifting. We are about general fitness," said Linsky.

Planet Fitness has a “no lunk policy,” meaning the gym has established rules like no throwing weights or grunting.

"This is a place where people can come and learn how to work out," said Linksy.

Linsky said the gym's location is ideal in the "up and coming shopping center" and that Planet Fitness is one of the fastest growing fitness chains in the nation.

“By the time we open there will be more than 1,000 Planet Fitness locations in the United States,” said Linksy, a success he attributes to the fitness center’s emphasis on customer service.

The chain is also known for its simple and affordable memberships, such as their basic membership which is $10 a month with no contract — a price that has not changed since the gym’s inception in 1992. Members can also upgrade to the Planet Fitness Black Card membership which is $19.99 with a 12 month contract that allows users to access any Planet Fitness and take advantage of amenities like tanning beds and massage chairs.

While there will be more than 100 pieces of cardio equipment at the Planet Fitness including treadmills, elliptical machines, recumbent bikes, and more, all members will also have access to unlimited personal training in groups that don’t exceed five people.  There will also be free weights, guided racks, and a designated 30 minute circuit area with ten different stations designed to give people “a quick and easy way to get in a full body workout” said Linsky.

Planet Fitness will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week save for three major holidays.
