Dorothy Gladys Hanne (Cornell) passed away peacefully in her sleep February 4, 2017 at Townsend House Assisted Living in Chico, CA. She was born in 1920 and raised in Turlock, and graduated from Turlock High School in 1938. After graduation she was a bookkeeper at the Turlock Branch of the Modesto Lumber Company for 9 years. During WWII she corresponded with her future husband, Harold, who was in the Army Air Corps, and they got married a few years after the war. In 1953 she and Harold opened the Alta Vista Sport Shop on Yosemite Blvd in Modesto, which they ran until 1978. They were charter members of the east Modesto Wesley Methodist Church. During retirement she volunteered for Interfaith Ministries Clothes Closet and United Cerebral Palsy. She was an active member of the Modesto Senior Citizens with whom she enjoyed aerobic and tap-dancing classes. In 2012 she moved to Townsend House Assisted Living in Chico where she enjoyed games, crafts, and singing to her son’s mandolin accompaniment. 

Dorothy is survived by her son Larry Hanne of Chico, daughter Marlene Miller of Roseville, and grandchildren Jennifer Miller of Pleasant Hill and Ryan Miller of La Mirada. The family is grateful to Townsend House Assisted Living staff and residents for their kindness and support during her last few years. Donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association or your favorite charity. She will be buried beside Harold, her husband of 57 years, in a Graveside Service, Sat, Feb. 11 at 11:00 AM in Turlock Memorial Park.
