One night after turning in a season-low shooting night, the Warriors turned it around and had the best shooting game of the season. But Cal State San Bernardino held off a strong Cal State Stanislaus second-half rally to defend its home court for a 75-66 win on Saturday in San Bernardino.
Evan Scott led the Warriors with 14 points as the Warriors dropped their fifth road conference game in as many tries to fall to 5-9 overall and 3-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Dan Daviess chipped in 12 with two 3-pointers and Marcus Lever scored 10 to pace the Warriors. As a team, Stanislaus shot a season-best 54.5 percent from the field (24-for-44) after making just 27.3 percent of chances Friday night at Cal Poly Pomona.
Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena, the first half was a tight battle. CSUSB led by six with 4 minutes left to play but the Warriors rallied to make it a one-point game, 27-26, at intermission.
The Coyotes roared out of the gate in the second half and took a 38-27 lead on an 11-1 run in the first three minutes. That lead quickly turned into a 19-point, 48-29, game on a Corey Caston 3-pointer at 15:19.
However, the Warriors fought back, chipping away at the CSUSB lead on a rally started by a Lever 3-pointer. Cal State Stanislaus used a 24-7 run to come within two points after a pair of Scott free throws with 8:21 left to go.
The game stayed close until a late San Bernardino spurt. Ryan Kinney's three-point bucket at 1:36 to go made it an eight-point CSUSB lead. CSUSB hit some free throws down the stretch for the final count.
The Warriors were playing without leading scorer Reggie Jones, who is also among the CCAA in scoring and field goal percentage. Jones went down with an ankle injury in the second half of the game against Cal Poly Pomona. Jones did return to the game late against Pomona, but was not in the Stanislaus lineup Saturday night.
Cal State San Bernardino (8-4, 6-2 CCAA) was led by Aaron Hill who had 19 points. Caston finished with 17 points. Hill and Caston accounted for 7 of the CSUSB's 11 three-pointers with Hill hitting four and Caston three.
