Stanislaus volleyball off to historic start

The Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team continues its stunning run in 2010, with the latest win being one of the most impressive so far.

On Saturday night, the Warriors topped No. 21 UC San Diego in four games (25-19, 24-26, 25-20, 25-22) at Warrior Arena to extend their winning stretch to four matches — a feat that hadn’t been achieved since the program joined the California Collegiate Athletic Association in 1998.

The win marked a perfect 3-0 week, as the Warriors improved to 5-2 in conference play and 8-4 overall. The start helped the program’s to match its best-ever start, one Stanislaus set in 2002 when that year’s team rolled to a school-record 19 wins overall.

UC San Diego, one of the top teams in the West Region, fell to 2-5 in the CCAA and 5-6 overall.

"It is nice to see our team continue to improve and play up to its ability," said Warriors coach Christina Lore.

Not surprisingly, team leader and junior outside hitter Lianne Vicchio took charge of the offense with 12 kills. Her efforts helped her to land the CCAA Volleyball Player of the Week honor after totaling 34 kills, two service aces, 29 digs and three blocks while posting a .270 attack percent in wins over Chico State, Cal State East Bay and UC San Diego.

Against UCSD, Vicchio got help from Melissa Bishop (nine kills), while Eva Chafeh, Andrea Fett and Kaycee Gow each finished with eight kills apiece.

The Warriors, however, will face more challenges. They go on the road to face Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night and then No. 5 Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday night, with both matches beginning at 7 p.m.
