Warriors 2-1 after first day of TOC

The Cal State Stanislaus softball team won its first two games to open the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno, then took No. 22 Hawaii Pacific to extra innings before losing 5-4.

The Warriors beat Dominican, 7-2, in game one then held on to defeat Western Oregon 2-1. In the nightcap, defending national champion Hawaii Pacific edged the Warriors, 5-4, in eight innings.

Jordan Flora went 6-for-9 with five doubles on the day to lead Cal State Stanislaus offensively. The Warriors are now 15-23 overall and will have two more pool play games today at the 22-team tournament. The event is being held at the Pedretti Sports Complex and Warrior Softball Field all weekend.

Stanislaus used a six-run third inning against Dominican and added a run in the fourth to easily run away with the opening game. Flora went 2-for-2 with two doubles in that contest. Brittney Rickles drove in two runs with a single in the third.

Starter Kristan Burns tossed the first 4 1/3 innings to earn the win. She gave up two unearned runs on two hits to even her record to 7-7. Alyssa Coelho pitched the last 2 2/3 innings without allowing a run on two hits.

In the second game, the Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning against Western Oregon when Kiley Mendez drove in two scored with a single up the middle to score Sarah Locarnini and Flora, who again doubled twice in the game.

The WOU Wolves rallied in the top of the seventh and scored a run on a sac fly. With runners at second and third with two outs, Brittani Weatherford struck out the final batter to end the game for the win.

In the nightcap, Locarnini and Flora each went 2-for-4 and the Warriors held a 3-2 lead into the fourth before HPU tied went ahead 4-3. Stanislaus tied it in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.

Flora started the rally with another double with two outs and scored on a Mendez single.

HPU held the Warriors scoreless in the eighth and scored on a bases-loaded single.

Cal State Stanislaus will face Montana State Billings and Grand Canyon today to finish pool play before championship brackets are determined for Sunday's games.
