Warriors picked 8th in softball poll

The Cal State Stanislaus softball team completed last season one game shy of reaching the NCAA Division II National Championship tournament, falling short of repeating the Warriors’ stellar run in 2007, when they lost in third game of the national tournament.
At the same time, last season was still impressive.
But it wasn’t enough for the Warriors to be considered a great threat to make too much of an impact in league play this season, according to California Collegiate Athletic Association coaches. The Warriors were picked to finish eighth out of 10 teams in the league standings and received 33 points, in addition to not being selected as a top-four CCAA tournament team.
But get this: The Warriors had two first-place votes.
Humboldt State, three-time defending conference regular-season champion, was tabbed to claim the conference title after receiving five first-place votes and a 76-point total. Cal State Monterey Bay was selected to repeat as CCAA Tournament champion.
The Warriors — who compiled a 35-21 overall record last season and lost a half-dozen seniors in the process — don’t begin conference play until Feb. 12, and they will look forward to making a statement this season. Before then, they will host the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational starting Feb. 5 at Pedretti Park.

Stanislaus baseball picked 7th
After earning their third 30-plus win season in four years, the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors were picked by CCAA coaches to finish seventh out of 11 teams in the league standings. They also didn’t make the list to participate in the league tournament.
The Warriors said good-bye to 12 seniors last season.
UC San Diego, defending conference champion and a D-II national semifinalist, earned six first-place votes and 96 points and was predicted to capture the CCAA title this season. Sonoma State had four first-place votes and was listed second in the preseason poll.

Alumni baseball game canceled
Because of heavy rain for the past few days, the Cal State Stanislaus alumni baseball game has been canceled. The annual gathering was scheduled for today, but Warrior Field has been hammered with rain and more is expected.
The Warriors will start the 2010 season at home against Fresno Pacific on at 2 p.m. on Feb. 1. The first league game is Feb. 26 against Cal State East Bay, a first-year participant of the CCAA.
