Dutch Lawrence drilled a two-run double to left-center field in the sixth inning, providing the ninth and 10th runs in Turlock High’s 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Modesto on Friday at Mark de la Motte Field.

With the victory, the Bulldogs (17-8) improved to 10-2 in Central California Athletic League play and clinched at least a share of the conference crown. The Panthers (5-19), meanwhile, dipped to 0-12.

The other four teams in the CCAL — Pitman, Gregori, Downey and Enochs — all were three games back entering Friday’s action. They’ll be fighting for the remaining two playoff berths awarded to the CCAL.

Turlock can win the league title outright by wining just one of three games against the Pride next week. Or, it can knock its rival out of the postseason with a sweep.

The Bulldogs will travel to face Pitman on Monday at 4 p.m., then host the Pride on Wednesday at 4, then wrap up the regular season Friday on the road.

“The ‘co’ is not very appealing,” said senior catcher Owen Miller, who was 2-for-3 in the contest and assured a baseball title to go along with the football title he earned in the fall. “It’s something, of course, but it’s not what we want.”

Mason Baker earned the victory for the Bulldogs, striking out eight in four innings of work, while yielding just two hits.

“I think Mason’s been a lot more focused,” said head coach Mike Souza. “Last week, he texted me on the morning of his start and said, ‘Coach, I think it would be a good idea to have somebody hit for me so I can concentrate on pitching.”

Batterymate Miller, meanwhile, thinks Baker’s recent success is due to him relaxing and trusting his defense.

“I agree with all that,” said Baker, who throws a fastball, change-up, slider and curveball. “It’s just trying to find all four pitches when I’m warming and then going out there and being confident.”
