Hilmar High volleyball got out to a slow start against Los Banos High on Monday but quickly turned things around to beat the Tigers three games to one (20-25, 25-23, 25-23, and 25-18).

“They were a little sluggish and tired from our previous matches,” Hilmar’s head coach Patti Harris said of her girls. “But they were confident in their ability to come back.”

The Yellowjacket offense was led by Emily Baptista, Haylee Pearce, and Alexis Alvernaz while Brittney Fielder and Valerie Ewing held down the court on defense. Baptista finished with 13 kills, Pearce finished with 20 assists and Alvernaz ended the day with 5 aces. Fielder recorded 3 blocks for Hilmar and Ewing tallied up 31 digs.

“Los Banos is a very good team with a really good defense and outside hitter,” Harris said. “I have a young team but they stay focused and get the job done.”

Hilmar hosts Hughson High Thursday in the Trans Valley League home opener.
