It was a record-breaking season for many track and field athletes and teams in the Journal’s coverage area.
Five athletes from Turlock and Pitman High advanced to the ultimate competition at the California State Meet — arguably one of the deepest and most competitive state meets in the country.
Pole vaulter Silas Fredeen of Turlock High ended his monumental season after breaking the school record and clearing 16-feet during the year.
He was second in California and earned a berth to the CIF State Meet from Buchanan High in Clovis. At the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters the week prior to state, Fredeen cleared 15 feet, 6 inches.
There, Fredeen placed 18th in California finishing among the best in the state after he cleared 14 feet, 9 inches.
The Pitman High boys 4x100m relay team consisting of Denzel Steckwren, Colby Vierra, Quincey Williams and Michael Moore made history and stamped their mark as the first relay team from Pitman to reach the state meet.
Once there, their ultimate goal to break the school record became the priority.
They knew that the work leading up to it was already done and a smooth race was needed from all four of them to achieve such a feat.
Head coach Thad Moren looked ready to have his boys on the record books and was optimistic prior to the start of the race that they would finish well.
Looking to top a time of 42.38, the four set forth on a journey to break the previous best time, and when the race concluded they had clocked in at 42.13.
Of the four representatives from Pitman, only Moore returns next season.
The Pride ended up finishing in 14th place in state, also setting a high standard for those to come in a county where the number of relay teams has been limited over the last two decades.
According to coach Moren, only four teams from the county have gone to the state meet in the 4x100 over the past 20 years.
The talent was plentiful this season, with a total of 47 athletes from Turlock, Pitman and Hilmar high reaching the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet.
