The Turlock High Tennis team remains undefeated (4-0) after taking down the Merced High Bears in Tuesday’s home match.

Merced rallied and fought hard, but the Bulldogs came away with the 8-1 victory as four of the nine matches went three sets for the ‘Dogs.

“It was a great win for us today; we were co-champs last year with Merced and it felt good to pull off a solid win,” Turlock tennis coach Linda Bejaran said. “It is a good win for us because we were co-champs with Merced last year. Good win for us.”

The number one singles player for the ‘Dogs, Jillian Temple, was able to defeat Isabel Serafin in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-0. Madeline Hillis, the number two singles, took down Jaymee Illescas 6-2, 1-6 and 6-4.

On the doubles side, the teams were different due to injuries. The number one doubles team lost in straight sets and the number two and three teams won in the third sets, respectively.

“They really made us work for the win and could have tipped the scales either way. I was proud of my girls for stepping it up and remaining focused and competitive,” Bejaran said.

Nina Sherwood and Melissa Littlefield made up the number two team and won 6-4, 1-6 and 10-7. Harneet Badial and Karina Penaloza made up the number three team to lead them to victory 6-4, 4-6 and 11-9.

“I feel good, I think they are being competitive and taking what they do in practice and incorporating in the games, they give it a 100 percent,” Bejaran said. “The girls gave it a great effort overall, I feel very good about what the girls are doing so far.”

Turlock will now travel to Buhach Colony on Thursday with a start time of 3 p.m.
