The Eastern League is a regular melting pot of rehabbing major league talent and aspiring top prospects, with its Double-A stadiums sprinkled across the East Coast and within distance of MLB ballparks.
Beginning his second full season in professional baseball with the Hartford Yard Goats, 2020 Turlock High graduate Cole Carrigg is proving that his age and experience matter little as to how he’ll attack opponents.
Through 14 games, the 22-year-old center fielder is hitting .222 (12-for-54). But the last week has offered glimpses of what the Colorado Rockies’ No. 3 prospect can blossom into.
The Modesto native, who was drafted 65th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft out of San Diego State, has scattered five hits over the last six games, with two being extra bases. He has also used his blazing speed to swipe four bases. What has been most impressive is that he’s had that success against two pitchers who are expected to contribute greatly to the Boston Red Sox this season.
On April 15, he collected a pair of hits, walked and stole three of those bases against Sox star Brayan Bello, who is rehabbing from soreness in his throwing shoulder. On Sunday, he blasted a solo home run, his second of the year against Boston’s big free agent acquisition from a year ago, Lucas Giolito, who continues to work his way back from an early-2024 Tommy John surgery.
Morris tosses seven shutout innings
Kade Morris, a 2020 alumnus of Pitman High, pitched his best game to date as a member of the Athletics organization last week.
Also on April 15, Morris tossed 7 shutout innings for Double-A Midland against the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Houston Astros organization. He struck out six batters while walking just one while earning the win in the Rockhounds’ 3-0 victory.
The outing marked the fifth scoreless start in his professional career and his third of more than six innings. It improved his 2025 record to 1-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.08 in his 17 1/3 innings over three starts.
